A double lumen endobronchial tube may be used in procedures requiring one-lung ventilation.However, correct placement of the DLT may be challenging and unrecognised malposition is not uncommon. Visual confirmation of correct position with a fibreoptic bronchoscope is generally regarded as the gold standard, as auscultation alone may be unreliable. However, the use of a bronchoscope requires training and can be time consuming, and its purchase and maintenance are expensive. Therefore, despite its obvious benefits, fibreoptic bronchoscopy is not routinely practised in all centres.
